In Which I am Caught in a Snowstorm
This summer I’m going to be documenting the places I travel with photo galleries. This is the first installment. Click on images to see a larger version.
Today, I went on a hike about an hour from my house to the top of a peak in the La Plata (redundant, I know) mountains. I went with my aunt and Leroy (a family friend). The day started out cloudy and got progressively worse.

Somebody's summer home, dug into the hillside.

The creek is visible in the center.

There was lots of snow left on northern exposures.

As we moved higher, there was progressively more snow drifted across the trail.

A large snowbank.

The clouds start moving in.

The snow had drifted deeply right below treeline.

Rain starts on the opposite ridge.

The next two peaks over from our destination.

Scree slope below the ridge.

Burwell Peak, with Mount Moss and Lavender Peak visible behind.

The snow moves in.

Almost to the top. Snow has started falling.

Mount Hesperus is in the background.

Lavender Peak and Mount Moss.

Victory! Leroy is at the top.

A large cornice left over from the winter.

The sun is trying to peek through.

The snow is starting to accumulate.

At the summit. The snow is stinging my face.

The view out of the canyon to the south.

The snow let up as we descended.

We took a steeper and more direct route down.

A waterfall at the trailhead.
